Etsy fees in Canada: three fees stacked on the same dollar

Etsy never charges you one fee — it charges three, and they stack on the same dollar. Listing ($0.27), transaction (6.5%), processing (3% + $0.25) — and the percentages apply to your item plus shipping. Then GST/HST goes on top of the fees themselves. On a $100 Ontario sale with $13 shipping, that's $12.72 in fees plus tax on them, before you've paid for materials or the label.

Worked example — $100 item + $13 shipping, Ontario (HST 13%): transaction+processing on $113 = $10.74, plus $0.25 + $0.27 fixed = $11.26, × 1.13 = $12.72. Offsite Ads, if it applies to your sale, adds its percentage on top — verify current rate and thresholds in your shop dashboard before opting in.

Etsy vs the competition ($100 sale, Ontario)

PlatformFees + tax on feesYou keep*
Kijiji / FB local pickup$0.00$100.00
Facebook — shipped$14.43$85.57
Etsy Canada$12.72$87.28
eBay.ca$20.08$79.92
Poshmark Canada$22.60$77.40

*After fees only; item cost not deducted. eBay/Facebook/Etsy figures assume $13 shipping charged to the buyer (pass-through). Kijiji has no shipping — buyer collects.

On fees alone, Etsy sits mid-pack — cheaper than eBay and Poshmark, pricier than a local cash deal. What you're buying for those fees is buyer intent: Etsy shoppers arrive looking for handmade, vintage, and craft-supply items with a credit card ready. For the right inventory, Etsy's smaller fee plus higher willingness-to-pay beats every alternative.

When Etsy is the right platform

Does "free shipping" save me fees?

No — it can cost you slightly more. The percentages follow the money: build $13 shipping into a $113 price and you pay 6.5% + 3% on the whole $113 either way. Free shipping is a conversion lever, not a fee lever.

What happens if my listing expires unsold?

After four months it expires and you can renew for another $0.27. Slow-moving inventory accumulates listing fees — renew strategically, not automatically. If an item has expired twice with no hearts or views, that's data: your price or your photos need work.

Do I need a business number or can I sell as a person?

Etsy doesn't require a business number to open a shop, but Canadian sellers are responsible for their own tax situation — once you cross hobby-scale revenue, GST/HST registration may apply. That's a CRA question, not an Etsy one; many Canadian resellers track income in a simple P&L and talk to an accountant at year-end.

How do returns work on Etsy?

Return policies are set by the seller, not the platform, but Etsy can step in on cases under its Purchase Protection program. If a case is decided against you, you refund and the fees are returned — the sale unwinds. Clear photos and honest condition notes prevent nearly all of it.
