Facebook Marketplace fees in Canada are not 5%

If you've read that Facebook Marketplace takes "a 5% selling fee," that number is from the United States. It gets repeated in reseller guides, YouTube videos, and comment threads — but it is wrong for Canadian sellers.

What Canadian sellers actually pay:

Sale typeFee
Local pickup, paid in person$0 — no fee
Shipped order (Meta checkout)10% of item + shipping
Shipped order ≤ $8flat $0.80
Minimum fee on any shipped order$0.80

Sales tax (GST/HST) applies on the fee itself in most provinces. Verified October 2026 against Meta's published Canadian fee schedule.

The 5% myth, and why it costs you money

The 5% figure is the US rate for shipped orders. Canadian pricing has always been separate: it was 2% + payment processing on the managed system, restructured to a flat 10% (minimum $0.80) when Meta checkout rolled out. When you plan sourcing prices or compare platforms using the US number, you overestimate your profit on every shipped sale — on a $150 shipped item that's a $7.50 error, before the HST on the fee you probably forgot too.

Flip the coin over and Facebook is also the cheapest major platform in Canada for local sales: $0 fees on pickup sales, where eBay would still take ~13.6% + per-order fees. That's why the right answer is rarely "avoid Facebook" — it's knowing which sales to route where.

What a $100 shipped sale actually costs you (Ontario, 13% HST)

PlatformFees (incl. HST on fee)You keep*
Facebook — local pickup$0.00$100.00
Kijiji$0.00$100.00
Vinted$0.00 (buyer pays)$100.00
Facebook — shipped$14.43$85.57
Poshmark CA$22.60$77.40
eBay.ca$20.08$79.92

*After fees only; the shipping charged to the buyer covers the label (pass-through). Item cost not deducted. eBay example: 13.6% final value fee + $0.40 per-order fee + 13% HST on the fee. Poshmark CA: flat 20% + HST on the fee. Full breakdown of all 8 platforms — including Etsy's four separate charges and Vinted's buyer-side fees — in the free calculator.

When Facebook Marketplace is the right choice in Canada

Avoid Facebook's fee trap: if the buyer insists on shipping and you accept Meta checkout, you pay 10% + HST on top. Under $8 sales lose a flat $0.80 — that's 10%+ effective on tiny items. Route those to Kijiji or local pickup instead.

Facebook Marketplace fee FAQ

Does Facebook Marketplace charge Canadian sellers for local pickup?

No. Sales completed in person with cash (or e-transfer outside Meta checkout) carry no fee. The 10% fee only applies to shipped orders paid through Meta checkout.

Is the fee 10% of the item or the item plus shipping?

The fee applies to the order total — item price plus shipping. If you charge $20 shipping on an $80 item, the fee is calculated on $100.

Can I avoid the fee on shipped sales?

Arranging payment outside Meta checkout for shipped items violates Marketplace policies and removes buyer/seller protections — not worth it. If you ship regularly, compare the real numbers: on many price points eBay's 13.6% + $0.40 + HST is worse than Facebook's 10% + HST despite the myth.

What about Facebook's 2% + processing from before?

That was the old managed-payments structure, replaced when Meta checkout launched. The current Canadian published rate is 10% (min $0.80) on shipped orders.

Do I charge HST on my sale?

If you're GST/HST-registered, that's between you and the CRA — the calculator assumes unregistered casual sellers (most resellers start there). The HST shown in these examples is the tax platforms add on their fee, which you pay as the seller.
